If there’s one destination that practically guarantees a relaxing escape, it’s a little jaunt to Mexico. We have traveled to Mexico a handful of times over the years and have always made such lovely family memories. We return feeling sun-kissed, refreshed, and overall well-rested.
One of my favorite times to head out of Indianapolis in search for warmer weather is during the winter, which is exactly what the thought was behind our most recent trip to Riviera Maya. While there are tons of visit-worthy spots in Mexico, most of them can be packed for in a similar way.
The activities you plan on doing during your visit will obviously impact what you need to tote along, but overall, there are some tried-and-true staples that will cover most of your bases. Whether you plan to spend most of your time lounging poolside or you’re booked for fancy resort dinners, this guide on what to pack for Mexico will help you put together practical and pretty looks!
p.s. I always recommend planning your outfits ahead of time, which can be especially helpful if you tend to overpack.
If there’s one piece you can undoubtedly wear over and over again on a Mexico vacation, it’s a flowy maxi dress. This staple makes for an ideal outfit choice for various outings and occasions. I love packing dresses because they’re just one piece, which means they don’t take up much luggage space and I also don’t have to think too much about putting together an outfit.
Wear a patterned dress to a resort lunch or an off-property dinner, or throw one on as you head to the pool. The shoes you pair with your dress are ultimately what will make it feel more casual or dressed up.
This goes without saying but packing ample swimwear is a must on a Mexico vacation. Many travelers intend on spending a big chunk of their time tanning by the pool or relaxing in the sand — and having plenty of swimsuit options to choose from is always a bonus.
I bought this belted one piece right before our Riviera Maya trip and I’m obsessed with the style and fit. It has such a timeless silhouette and is super flattering. The chocolate brown color is so on trend right now too!
I know they’re on the bulkier side, but you’ll definitely want to bring some sun hats along with you on your trip. Not only will they keep the sun out of your face (and your skin protected!) but they also make for a chic accessory.
Tip: Use a hat clip and attach it to your carry-on or tote bag so you don’t have to sacrifice luggage space!
Similar to the maxi dress concept above, a tank dress is another good go-to on a beach vacation. This style is especially great if you’re traveling somewhere with hot temperatures. I love this white pick and know it will be a versatile staple in my wardrobe for years to come.
I paired it with these strappy heels, which are the perfect in between a standard high heel and sandals. Since sharing them on my trip, they have been a KSD bestseller!
For a nighttime look in Mexico, some statement earrings can really level up the vibes. My exact earrings are sold out but this pair and this one are both similar! Adding a cute clutch is also a good move — this one is affordable and is the perfect size for everyday use and more special occasions.
I know I touched on this above, but having plenty of swimwear options on a Mexico vacation is always a plus. The same rings true for cover-ups, so you can flaunt a variety of looks during your time away. If there’s one piece you buy for your trip, I’d make a strong case for it being this cover-up.
For starters, it’s under $30, but even though it’s budget-friendly, it gives off major Saks Fifth Avenue vibes. The sheer fabric is so chic and I personally love the length — not too long and not too short. Just throw on a sun hat (this one is my favorite) and some sunglasses and you’ll be set for poolside lounging!
When you’re in the mood to switch things up, opt for a breezy pair of linen shorts and a button up shirt. Linen shorts are one of the best pieces you could bring on a beach vacation because they’re lightweight and pair well with a variety of outfits. If you’re traveling during a cooler season, you could always swap the shorts out for some linen pants!
The outfit below is a great option for those moments when you’re not kicking back at the pool or beach. Think of it as a go-to for lunches, dinners, happy hours, or adventuring. You could also throw this on before you head to the spa.
I appreciate that these linen shorts hit at the mid-thigh — in my opinion, it’s more comfy to wear a pair that isn’t too short! I styled them with this cinched waist shirt and loved the neutral combo. A bonus about this look is that it could easily be reworn post-vacation.
I’m admittedly more of a neutral girl, but if there’s a time and place for a pop of pattern, it’s while you’re on a beach vacation. This playful cheetah bikini was calling my name, and I’m so glad I purchased it ahead of our trip!
To keep things more streamlined (and not too busy) I added a simple sarong cover-up. This one has metallic detailing that gives it some personality while the copper color keeps things on the more classic side. Some basic flip flops, sunglasses, a hat, and a beach bag provide the finishing touches.
Like I mentioned at the beginning of this post, maxi dresses are one of the most useful pieces you could pack for a Mexico vacation. They’re just so easy to throw on and they can be dressed up or down depending on your mood.
Something about this paisley dress felt particularly appropriate for a beach trip. I adore the cut out detailing and love these colors (so “in” for spring and summer!) If you wanted to make this a bit more formal you could swap the sandals for some heels.
Another smart staple to tote along on a Mexico trip? A basic pair of linen pants. These bottoms can be worn as a cover-up or as an outfit base. This pair is actually from Amazon (and they’re under $40!) Not only are they comfortable but the laid back style makes them perfect for vacation wear.
On top, go with a sweater vest or tank to keep the casual vibes intact. This outfit would work for just about any vacation activity and it’s another one that can be worn long after you return.
p.s. These raffia slide sandals are one of my all-time favorite purchases. They’re consistently one of my bestsellers, and while they’re a splurge, they’re a shoe you’ll have in your closet for a lifetime.
